Discover Wānaka
Slow down, explore and connect with one of New Zealand's most spectacular alpine destinations.
Set beside the clear waters of Lake Wānaka and surrounded by the Southern Alps, Wānaka combines extraordinary landscapes, outdoor adventure and a relaxed mountain-town atmosphere.
It is a place where you can spend the morning hiking in the mountains, cycle beside the lake in the afternoon and finish the day discovering local food and hospitality - or simply slow down and enjoy the landscape around you.
Gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and surrounded by lakes, rivers, mountains and valleys, Wānaka is an ideal destination for travellers looking to connect with nature and experience this part of New Zealand at a more thoughtful pace.
Experience Wānaka Your Way
Wānaka is a destination that rewards exploration.
Outdoor enthusiasts can discover hiking and biking trails, skiing and snowboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding, climbing and other adventures across the surrounding mountains and waterways.
But you don't need to fill every day with activities.
Walk along the lakefront, explore local cafés and restaurants, visit independent businesses, enjoy the region's food and drink, find a quiet place beside the water or simply take in the surrounding mountains.
The wider Wānaka region also includes places such as Lake Hāwea, Makarora, the Matukituki Valley and Cardrona. Spending a little longer in the region gives you an opportunity to discover experiences beyond Wānaka's town centre and better understand the landscapes and communities that make this destination special.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Wānaka?
Wānaka changes considerably throughout the year, making it a genuine four-season destination.
Summer - December to February
Long daylight hours and warmer weather make summer an excellent time for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming and exploring the lake and surrounding valleys.
Autumn - March to May
Cooler temperatures and changing colours create beautiful conditions for walking, cycling and exploring the region. Autumn can be a particularly rewarding time for travellers looking for a quieter pace.
Winter - June to August
Winter transforms Wānaka into a mountain destination. Skiing and snowboarding become major attractions, while the town itself offers restaurants, local experiences, wellness and plenty of ways to enjoy the alpine atmosphere away from the slopes.
Spring - September to November
Spring brings longer days and an interesting combination of seasons. Snow can remain in the mountains while walking and cycling trails at lower elevations become increasingly accessible.
There isn't one perfect time to visit Wānaka. Think about the experiences you want from your trip and choose the season that suits the way you like to travel.
How Long Should You Stay?
Wānaka is sometimes treated as a short stop between other South Island destinations, but it is worth giving yourself time here.
Two or three days will allow you to experience some of the highlights, but staying longer gives you much more flexibility to explore the wider region, spend time outdoors and adapt your plans around changing alpine weather.
A longer stay also gives you the opportunity to slow your itinerary down.
Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, you can explore local businesses, discover less obvious places and spend more time connecting with the landscape and community.
Sometimes travelling better means simply staying a little longer.
Getting to Wānaka
Wānaka is located in New Zealand's South Island, approximately an hour's drive from Queenstown.
For many international and domestic travellers, Queenstown Airport is the nearest major airport. From Queenstown, Wānaka can be reached by road via the Crown Range or through the Kawarau Gorge.
Regular coach and shuttle services also connect Wānaka with Queenstown and other South Island destinations, making it possible to include Wānaka in your journey without necessarily hiring a car for your entire trip.
If you're driving, remember that New Zealand drives on the left-hand side. Alpine roads can be winding and weather conditions can change quickly, particularly during winter.
Take your time - in this part of New Zealand, the journey can be part of the experience.
Getting Around Wānaka
Wānaka's town centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, with the lakefront, restaurants, cafés and many local businesses within walking distance.
Walking and cycling are also great ways to experience the area. Trails extend around parts of Lake Wānaka and through the surrounding landscape, while e-bikes can make longer journeys accessible to more travellers.
For destinations further away, rental vehicles, taxis, shuttles and transfer services are available. Some activity providers also offer transport to hiking tracks, ski areas and other experiences.
Before automatically hiring a car for your entire stay, consider what you actually want to do. A combination of walking, cycling, shuttles and shared transport may work well for parts of your journey.
Explore Beyond the Lakefront
The Wānaka lakefront is beautiful, but there is much more to discover.
Explore walking and cycling trails, visit nearby communities, experience the Matukituki Valley, discover Lake Hāwea or travel towards Makarora and the dramatic landscapes surrounding Mount Aspiring National Park.
Spend time with local businesses and operators. Discover locally produced food and drink. Learn about the environment you're travelling through and the people who call the region home.
Leaving space in your itinerary for these experiences can often lead to the moments you remember most.
Travel with Care
Wānaka's natural environment is fundamental to the experience of visiting the region.
The mountains, waterways, forests and trails that attract travellers are also environments that need to be respected and protected.
Travellers can contribute through simple choices: follow marked tracks, take waste with you, respect wildlife, follow responsible camping rules, use lower-impact transport where practical and support businesses that demonstrate genuine environmental and community commitments.
New Zealand's Tiaki Promise also encourages everyone travelling through Aotearoa to care for the land and sea, respect culture and communities and travel safely.
Travelling responsibly doesn't have to mean sacrificing the experiences you came for.
Often it means experiencing a destination more deeply.
