Discover Queenstown

Adventure, nature, local experiences and unforgettable landscapes in the heart of New Zealand's Southern Alps.

Set on the shores of Lake Whakatipu and surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges, Queenstown is one of New Zealand's most iconic destinations. Known internationally for adventure, the region offers much more than adrenaline, from hiking, cycling and spectacular scenery to local food and wine, culture, wellness experiences and opportunities to connect with the community and natural environment.

Whether you're visiting for a few days or staying longer, Queenstown is a destination worth exploring beyond the obvious attractions.

Experience Queenstown Your Way

Queenstown may be famous as an adventure destination, but there is no single way to experience it.

Thrill-seekers can find bungy jumping, jet boating, skiing, mountain biking, paragliding and countless other adventures. Travellers looking for a slower experience can walk beside Lake Whakatipu, explore the region's trails, discover local food and wine, enjoy a scenic cruise or simply spend time surrounded by the Southern Alps.

The wider region also makes Queenstown an excellent base for exploring places such as Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Gibbston, each offering a different perspective on the landscapes, communities and character of the region.

The best Queenstown trip isn't necessarily the one where you fit in the most. Give yourself time to explore, discover local places and experience the destination at your own pace.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Queenstown?

Queenstown is a year-round destination, and each season creates a very different experience.

Summer - December to February
Long days and warmer weather make summer ideal for hiking, cycling, lake activities, sightseeing and exploring the region outdoors.

Autumn - March to May
The landscape changes to shades of red and gold, particularly around nearby Arrowtown. Cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery make this a great season for walking, cycling, food and wine experiences and exploring at a slower pace.

Winter - June to August
Queenstown becomes one of New Zealand's major winter destinations. The surrounding ski areas attract skiers and snowboarders, while the town offers everything from adventure and sightseeing to restaurants, wellness and après-ski experiences.

Spring - September to November
Longer days return while snow remains on the surrounding mountains. Spring can offer an interesting combination of skiing, hiking, cycling, sightseeing and other outdoor experiences.

There isn't really one “best” time to visit Queenstown. The right season depends on what you want from your trip.

How Long Should You Stay?

Queenstown is often included as one stop on a larger New Zealand itinerary, but rushing through the destination can mean missing much of what makes the region special.

While you can experience some highlights in two or three days, consider staying longer if your itinerary allows it. A longer stay gives you time to explore beyond central Queenstown, visit nearby communities, enjoy outdoor experiences without rushing and adapt your plans to the weather.

It also gives you more opportunities to discover local businesses and experiences rather than moving quickly between the most popular attractions.

Getting Around Queenstown

Central Queenstown is compact, and many restaurants, shops, accommodation options and attractions can be reached on foot.

For travelling further, Queenstown has a public bus network as well as taxis, shuttles, ferries, rental vehicles and other transport services. Walking and cycling can also be excellent ways to experience parts of the region, including sections of the Queenstown Trail.

If you're planning to drive, remember that New Zealand drives on the left-hand side. Roads outside Queenstown can be mountainous and winding, and conditions can change considerably during winter.

Don't automatically assume that you need a rental car for your entire stay. Think about where you actually want to go and consider walking, cycling, public transport and shared transport where practical.

Go Beyond the Most Popular Places

Some of Queenstown's famous attractions are popular for good reason, but leave some room in your itinerary for discovery.

Explore local walking and cycling trails. Visit independent businesses. Try locally produced food. Spend time in nearby communities. Learn about the environment you're travelling through. Look for experiences that introduce you to the people and stories behind the destination.

Travelling this way can create a more memorable trip while helping spread the benefits of tourism more widely through the community.

Travel with Care

Queenstown's mountains, lakes, rivers and communities are fundamental to what makes the destination special. Travellers can play a role in protecting them.

New Zealand's Tiaki Promise encourages visitors to care for the land, sea and nature, travel safely, respect culture and communities, and leave the country in a way that future generations can continue to enjoy.

Simple decisions can make a difference.

Consider lower-emission transport where practical, respect walking and cycling tracks, dispose of waste responsibly, follow camping rules, support local businesses and respect the communities you visit.

You can also look for tourism experiences and businesses that demonstrate genuine environmental and community commitments.

A meaningful trip isn't only about where you go - it's also about how you travel.

A Few Tips Before You Go

Don't over-plan your days.
Queenstown has a huge range of activities, but trying to fit too much into each day can turn a holiday into a checklist. Leave room to explore.

Be prepared for changing weather.
Queenstown has four distinct seasons, and conditions can change quickly around alpine environments. Check forecasts and prepare appropriately for outdoor activities.

Book important experiences early during busy periods.
Summer, winter, school holidays and major events can be particularly popular, so accommodation and high-demand activities are worth planning ahead.

Explore beyond central Queenstown.
The surrounding region is part of the experience. Depending on your interests and available time, consider places such as Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Gibbston.

Walk when you can.
Central Queenstown is very walkable, and walking or cycling can sometimes be a better way to experience the destination than seeing everything through a car window.

Support local.
Independent restaurants, cafés, tourism operators, producers and community initiatives can provide some of the most memorable experiences of your trip.

Leave some flexibility.
Weather, local recommendations and unexpected discoveries may change your plans - and sometimes those changes become the best part of the journey.
